i heard james cameron talk on the radio about how he's a "serious artist" (he kept talking about himself that way)... it's confounding to compare the different pressures that, for example, these two directors put on themselves. JZK it seems must really feel a weight to connect with and represent the voiceless (compared to the egomaniacal and profit-driven spectacle of cameron). on the other hand, though i didn't love 24city, it's not exactly without risk (i thought you dug that one ning?) with its blend of documentary and fiction. i agree that i don't like the direction of his latest films but i can sympathize with the burden he must feel to represent and connect. (i remember an interview with tarkovsky saying how gratifying it was for him to get letters after MIRROR from all over russia saying things like 'how did you get into my most personal dreams?' and that for one of your more hermetic films. which means only: there's a way to do both but it requires some magic.)

went to the JZK talk monday night. i think he's been struggling with this 'difficulty' question in his film a lot these days. the conversation--in very gentle nudges--went towards his more popularist leanings in recent films. he said something to the rough effect of 'i tell myself to be absolutely independent in my filmmaking, but at the same time i don't want to make marginalized work because i want to have engagement with my (chinese) audience.' a friend commented that it's as if he's consciously trying to be more straight forward, and de-intellectualize his work. feels kinda pretentious to me. i like the earlier artier stuff better.
